EVALUATION Q4

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?

From the feedback we received I have learnt that our music video had a good story line to it and is easy to follow.  Our audience seemed to like our story line and enjoy following our artist Deavian in her journey. However we could have improved on our lighting, lip-syncing, variety of shots.

EVALUATION Q3

HOW DID YOU USE MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?
  • Brand new state of the art video cameras, using memory cards. We used these cameras to take still shots of ourselves filming, of the mock-up's of our ancillary products. These were also used to take pictures of our animatic storyboard.

  • JVC video cameras with special lighting equipment. We used these to film our music video, our preliminary products.

  • Flip cameras were used to film mini class discussions and presentations such as us pitching our music video to our teacher Mary.

  • Blogger -used to present our research, our planning, our progress, our feedback and evaluation.

  • The Internet. We used this to research anything we needed, to find examples of what we want our music video to look like, to create things like prezi.

  • Photoshop and Quark express for the construction of our ancillary products. To edit produce our digipak's, advertisement's, mood boards etc.

  • Final Cut Pro was used to edit our music videos, to cut and add effects like the black and white effect, To slow down/speed up a particular shot or scene.

EVALUATION Q2

HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT (VIDEO) AND ANCILLARY PRODUCTS (DIGIPAK AND ADVERTISEMENT)?

Well, my ancillary product (my digipak) has only one visual link to my music video, and thats on the inside cover of the digipak. The ending shot of my music video is print screened on to the inside covers of my digipak, with a quote from the song "Don't loose who you are, in the blur of the stars." Also, the title of the album is named after our song "Who You Are" so it makes it creates a clear link to the music video.

Do I think my target audience would be able to make the link immediately between the music video and the digipak? No. I think the visual link should be stronger and on the front cover of the digipak if i want my audience to recognise it straight away.

However in both my music video AND my ancillary product the artist is staring straight into the camera - breaking the 4th wall- and making it more intimate between the artist and the audience, as Andrew Goodwin stated.

EVALUATION Q1

IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

The music video to Adele - Someone Like You had a huge influence in MY music video. I used some visual aspects from her music video that I thought would suit my song and genre and imbedded them into my own music video. What struck me most was the black and white effect running throughout the whole music video. I thought it was effective as it stripped down all distractions of the video and emphasised the song by putting all focus on the song she is singing and not so much about the artist or the music video. Adele's song is also stripped down to just Adele and what she's feeling. Its raw emotion. Our song Who You Are is about Deavian talking to young girls telling them to sty true to who they are from the point of view of a person who has been through it herself.

In the images above i am showing another way Adele's music video to Someone Like You influenced my music video. The bridge scene. Adele's whole music video is about her walking along this sidewalk with the bridge in the background, i feel like it symbolizes her walking away from her problems as metaphorically on the other side of the bridge, her problems lay. In our music video, the first few scenes is our artist watching over this troubled girl then towards the end of the song we bring in the bridge scene where she see's the troubled girl, this, like Adele, symbolizes the girl being on the other side of that bridge and leaving her troubles behind.

Andrew Goodwin's theory states that all pop music videos follow a strict verse, chorus structure. Our music video follows that structure as every time the chorus comes in there is a change of scene.

OH NO!

Due to all the exam stress i've been carrying on my shoulders this month, i've failed to meet my ancillary product deadline. As you can see from the screen shots i have finished my digipak and was just beginning my magazine advertisement but failed to finish it in time for the deadline. I now have no visual of my advertisement to refer to in my evaluation, so I am accounting for any lack of information in my evaluation in advance!

Do's and Dont's

Do

  • Use a c l e a r font. The audience needs to know what they're buying, and it must be readable from a distance.
  • Include barcodes, copyright symbols, record label logos etc. The record label needs recognition in the digipak, and barcodes are always on digipaks otherwise you can't buy it. So make it look real.
  • Link the theme of your digipak to your music video/genre.
Don't
  • Use a fancy font, if its difficult to read the audience wont make an effort to read it. It must be clear and stand out.
  • Place text over artist's face. This is your artist's debut album the artist MUST stand out.. otherwise your not promoting them well enough.
  • Make your design too complex. A complex design will not make take the focus off the artist/album/release date etc.

Short list of ideas

Font ideas:

The Font ideas iv been contemplating are quite similar. They are all very simple and not what you would call eye catching fonts. This is because i want my digipak and magazine advert to be quite simple.

  • Calibri

  • Century Gothic
  • Candara

Colour ideas;
  • Black, White/Grey and Teal
  • Black, White/Grey and Light Pink

Where my Ideas are coming from!

The ideas for my digipak cover and advert are inspired by two album covers; Adele's and Pixie Lott's. This is because they are both simple and beautiful album covers. They both have a black, white and green/yellow theme which is what I'm opting to do for my album cover. Out of both i must say I prefer Pixie Lott's as white is the more dominant colour whereas in Adele's I find Grey is more dominant, and i feel that white looks better with Pixie's strong black eye make-up and looks better with the green cross painted on the cover.

Analysis of 3 magazine advertisments within a similar genre as our artist

  1. Pixie Lott

Pixie Lott's magazine advertisement for her debut album Turn It Up is very simple. The rhetorical question 'Are you listening to Cry Me Out' stands out and subliminally implies that you should be listening to it. The right side of the magazine advert uses plain colours, grey, black and white to attract attention to the album cover.

       2. Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding's magazine advertisement for her album Lights is very similar to her digipak. This creates a visual link so when people see her digipak on the shelves in HMV they will recognise it. Also, unlike Pixie Lotts magazine advert, Ellie Goulding has comments and ratings from critics which leads the audience to believe the album is as good as the critics say it is.

  3. Adele

Adele's magazine advertisement for her album 21 has very clear visual links to the digipak cover. The close-up of her face, the shadow on one side and the black and white theme allows the audience to recognise her album on the shelves. The yellow and white font is very simple just like her album and magazine advert covers. This promotes Adele as a very simple artist with simple music videos and perhaps slow paces songs which is true.

What is the importance of Digipaks

  • Promotion of the artist and the song. Being the artist, they have their own views and portrayals of the song, and the digipak - as well as the music video- is a good way to put that across.
  • With songs now being downloaded on itunes, digipaks and CD's have become more of a collectors item. A digipak is a nice way to package the CD in a promotional way.
  • Visual links to the music video. Colour theme, artists outfit, makeup, location of the music video etc.
  • Promotion for the music industry. The record label is always on either the cover or back cover of the digipak.

Skills Development

Here is a list of skills I've gained during the editing of my music video;

  • Marking- making sure the lip syncing matches the song
  • That the jump between shots has to be to the beat of the song, so the music video flows
  • To use different shots for different parts of the song to tell our story, e.g. when the bridge of the song comes in our artist is on a bridge.
  • I learnt that there can't be too many cross-dissolves in a music video

Analysis of 3 Digipak's within a similar genre as our artist

This is Pixie Lott's digipak to her self titled debut album 'Pixie Lott.' The simple layout of the digipak is effective as the image is simply her in the center of the cover with a plain grey background. It promotes her well as it is trying to establish her as a new artist. The font is white and very girly which conveys Pixie's style; girly.

Ellie Goulding's 'Lights' digipak has a strict 'lights' theme. The black and gold colour's stand out amongst the image of Ellie surrounded by golden lights. The font is simple but again, gold which blends in with the theme. The overall digipak is eye catching and gives you a clear rock-chick expectation of the album.

Eliza Doolittle's digipak is very cute and youthful. The different colour's stand out from the plain blue sky-like background. The image of her holding a giant dice suggests she is playing games, which has very child-like connotations. The font is plain and black and is in a banner which supports the theme of cartoon-like randomness.

    SCREEN GRABS

    F I N I S H E D !

Last minute editing on November 28th

Once we had done the sequence of the music video we went through it and added many cross dissolve's. The reason for this is because we feel our song and the theme to our music video is complimented by slow movement and transitions between shots.

Also, we made our vide black and while like Adele's - Someone Like You. We did this because we though it strips our artist - Diavian- of exterior beauty and focuses mainly on the message behind the video - that she is dinging to guide these lost girls with little/no confidence.

    EXTENDED DEADLINE!!!!

SO, after a long day of endless panicking our teachers have extended our deadline!! Just as we were on to the last 10 seconds of our music video the whole thing went out of sync and we could not get it back in time for the deadline.
