Andrew Goodwins Theory

Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Andrew Goodwin believes that there are three different ways in making a music video and that is:

  • Illustration - When the music video itself relates to the lyrics of the song.
  • Amplification - When the music video adds another meaning to the lyrics of the song, but it does not aim to contradict it.
  • Disjuncture - The music video has nothing to do with the lyrics and has no meaning to the song.
Below is a list of examples I researched which fitted into the three categories from above.

An example of Illustration in a music video would be Goapele - Milk and Honey because whenever the chorus comes in, we always see clips of honey and milk in the frame.

An example of Amplification in a music video would be Lil Wayne - How to Love because we see different stories in the video and we are lead to believe something when that doesn't actually happen in the end of the music video.

An example of Disjuncture in a music video would be Lady Gaga Ft Beyonce - Telephone because the lyrics of the song has literally nothing to do with it which is actually quite confusing as a viewer.
